I would try a slightly different approach ; visual data collection with sonar data . Perhaps some type of AI integration with wetware is also should be taken into consideration.

Could something like this be used a first version for the radar system? Except water proof obviously.

Thats a good idea. I think we can calibrate it with a camera so that when an object is detected by the camera, we’ll point the sensor towards that point exactly to get its distance. But there is a pullback here, the sensor has a very low range for distance.
