Detecting handle lock breaking

I have a requirement to detect or sense when bike handle lock is broken or opened by thieves. Any ideas how to accomplish this

Detect current flow by using a resistance in series to the lock mechanism inside the lock itself. If lock is not damaged, a set resistance will draw a known current. If the vehicle is hot wired, a lower resistance will draw more current.

Just a thought, using the accelerometer we could sense, right? 1. the reading when the handle lock breaks 2. when the thief moves the bike. If the reading varied from the reading under normal locked condition, alarm/ alert signal is triggered

John Rodrigues The handle lock is concealed and i didn’t find any videos showing the mechanism. Am looking for understanding the locking system first, and any innovative ideas to sense a break in handle lock and not a normal opening of lock.

Harsha The theives break the lock with brute force and start the vehicle. Not hot wiring the bike. Handle lock is a mechanical stick or something that comes in between the handle rotation axis.
The idea you suggest is good to sense hot wiring provided the key based start draws lesser current. But if the vehicle also uses a relay inside then it would be same as hot wiring and same current would flow. I think handle lock is totally mechanical and no electric current is involved, am i right ? Please correct me, i don’t know much of this mechanical stuff.

Jibin Lukose It can be done but accelerometers can sense tilt and shocks. We dont know for sure if there will be significant shock generated on the handle lock being broken. I have seen accelerometer sense nothing when moved very slowly. As you said, the tilt values in all axis can be measured for any changes. But it will give false alert when someone moves the vehicle for taking out his bike, so someone is asking me to implement some technique to find out if handle lock opened, with brute force or with duplicate key (No shock will be detected here).

I am thinking of a compass based sensor which will lock when kept idle for some minutes and it will trigger when handle moved by some degrees. But this will not work and give false alert when vehicle rotated by some degrees. So the key would be to detect the delta or change in angle of the handle w.r.t the body of the motorcycle. But how to do it? Which sensor to use is the puzzle.
