how do u know if u should start building in ios or android? is it simply a preference, or does it make most sense to build in the language that most of your potential customers will be using?

First, Client or Business requirement. If it’s a personal thing, then it’s ok to choose the platform you wish. It’s always good to have a common code base to target multiple platforms. Both Android and iOS are in a way the target that needs to be focused as both are good in the market.
