Robert Lancer The search feature seems like it needs some attention. I think fixing this will encourage visitors to become members, and enable members become more active collaborators.
From what I’m seeing, a new visitor coming to the site to collaborate on 3D projects will get started by typing 3D into the search box. Doing this in a Mac Chrome browser, they’ll only get eight results:
Hitting enter does not take the user to a full page of results.
In contrast, a Google search of Collaborizm.com for 3D finds more than ten pages of results:
Limited search on the site really restricts the site’s ability to connect collaborators: new visitors think there are only eight 3D items on Collaborizm so it looks like there is nothing to work on; existing users with 3D modeling projects can’t get help from visitors since the posts can’t be found using the search field; and no one can take advantage of older posts with valuable information in them.
The only way a visitor can see what is really going on is to navigate into the home page menus. But this also significantly limits access to info since they have to go through Projects to see details, and most of the projects aren’t immediately visible since they’re on Ice (maybe because no one can find them?).
This issue is likely causing a lot of people to sign up, look around a little, maybe sign up for a featured or trending project, and not come back or contribute more.
If this gets attention, it would be great if advanced search features could be added too. These would enable filtering of results, like by post type (tutorial, contest, question), status (open, iced) and topic (engineering, consumer electronics).
