Why to go for Proximity digital sensor, we can simply replace the ir pair with LED and LDR. Now the concept is the same, reflection and reception. LDR has better receptive power to white than any other light. So the input from the ldr would be in analog form and different surfaces give different readings, thus once the comparison is done, the MCU can be programmed like wise.

instead of using Proximity digital sensor, it would b better to use LDR & LED and cheap too

i think an optocoupler is enough for this purpose.As it will be able to sense black and other colours differently…
