Time to Reboot

It’s been a year…The concept is clear, design is at it’s final evolution and the sky is clear. Perfect time for a Take off.
The actual work only begins after 10th of the next month.
Before we start our engine - All members have a sub-mission to complete:-
Mission briefing would be given below;- before that i would like all to take a note

  1. The participation, willingness, interest and skill sets of all those who participate along will be cross checked and assessed.
  2. Only those who participate from this very beginning- would be accommodated in the core team. Exception can be made :- when someone proves they are worth it.
  3. For this session any programming language that can get things done real quick would be considered the most apt ; but the main framework would be wholly done in c++ ; and client side in unity game engine. So keep your c++ and c# scripting skills sharp.
  4. Before forming the core team all members would be assessed by me personally to understand and suggest improvement . So be ready for an interview.

Mission Briefing:

Overview:-

Our game use wold map as the game map.
The map should be very much precise - even the smallest of the island to the tiny rivers and streams should be clearly visible.
Hint:- Get the map from NASA or google map (without roads, bridges and any sort of overlapping stuffs ). ( High definition )

Programming part

Info- The map you get ; be it .jpeg or .png would be heavy for sure [most probably more than 1 GB in size ]. Our server’s can’t load the entire thing in it’s ram since it’s too bulky. Also this map would have to be shipped with every client side application.
Our mission is to reduce the size and manipulate it to be used in the game.

Schema and rule for compression

This is how it’s supposed to work
Suppose we have a 10*5 pixel wide map where { - denote water , * denote land }
map.jpeg

map.txt
# lineNumber [numberOfEntrys] = [startingCo-Ordinate - endingCo-Ordinate][ - ][ - ][ - ][ - ]
# if ( startingCo-Ordinate == endingCo-Ordinate ) then [startingCo-Ordinate] is enough
1[1] = [7]
2[1] = [3-8]
3[1] = [3-5]
4[3] = [0][3][7-8]
5[1] = [7]

Consider this as a collaborated team work rather than an individual work.

  1. Brainstorm for a good and possible solution
  2. Suggest source to get the world map
  3. Suggest API’s and programming language to implement it (preferably c++)
  4. Collaborate and develop it using git
  5. Debug and release a stable version of the same with GUI for future use
  6. Document the entire session

We are in search of a high resolution map . After a year long searching we have found a software to do the job. Google map downloader . To download the entire earth we can use latitude -180 to +180 and longitude -85 to + 85 . At a zoom level of 13 the smallest of the islands in the world would be visible . But for better clarity I personally choose a map with zoom level 19 ,20 or 21 . With zoom level 13 thier are approximately 6 billion tiles. Once downloaded we will join all these pics to make up the original map. Home system is freezing when trying to download the map with zoom level 13. So I have forwarded a letter to our department head to utilise the college server to do the same. Hope things work well .

Open street map have a editable map with size 38 GB compressed ; I am now planning to download it using the college server. Once i get the map we are intending to build a program to convert it to our desired format using OpenCV ( open computer vision ) library’s. A git repo would be started for collaborating soon.

We are near to generating a map on our own standards useful for our game, http://openstreetmapdata.com/data/coastlines This is the website from which the maps are downloaded. The files downloaded are shape files ESRI standard. For generating data for our map we have to convert it to some pictorial formats like JPEG or JPG. We have tried many software’s and tools trying to convert it , but so far nothing was fruitful; our project cant move forward without a map, so if anyone have some solution on this please leave a comment below As Soon As Possible.
