Bovine Heat Stress

Steven Reubenstoneasked me for a good, practical example of how this technology could be used. Here is one: preventing heat stress in cows.

“Hot and humid environmental conditions stress the lactating dairy cow and reduce intake of the nutrients necessary to support milk yield and body maintenance… In addition to reduced milk yield (15 to 40%), cows have lower milk fat content, impaired reproductive performance, and greater susceptibility to health problems during hot weather.” (from http://extension.uga.edu/publications/detail.html?number=B956)

I think the open technology should be able to help solve this problem by lowering the core body temperature of cows.

It would go into a vest that looks like this, but larger:

This vest was made for a proposal for keeping military working dogs’ core temperatures down in very hot weather.

It’s a great use case that you are envisioning. I do think the vest is best suited for Dogs and other animals. I highly doubt for cows as they are maintained in a well equipped farm houses.

Here’s the reality of third world countries. Not all farmers are affordable because of various factors like Cost, Cleaning and Maintenance of vest. We need to also think about making it waterproof as the farmers would let their cows out in the morning (their own farm or some of them roaming around the house or village). In the evening, the cows would come back home. Also, In the evening and night, when there’s no sunlight, the temperature would be generally cool and the cows doesn’t require a vest.

Ranjan Dailata Thanks for this. Sorry I didn’t see it sooner: for some reason it didn’t show up in my new items feed.

I provided this post as an example of how the core technology has many applications and can solve a wide variety of issues relating to heat stress conditions.

I definitely understand that not all farmers would be able to afford this - or even want it. The best use case would probably be industrial-scale agriculture where the farm owners would make an investment in this kind of solution knowing it would increase milk yield during hot ambient conditions.

I did also want to say that the dog vest in the photo above uses rugged blowers that are meant for use in wet conditions. These are the three black items on the vest.

Really though, the technology is meant for people so they can lower energy use and reduce their impact on the environment.

Thanks for the post!
