I suggest NodeJS for backend and Browser play. NodeJS is very lightweight and modern way for this online games. Also with Webkit you can make amazing graphics in browser without additional downloads. Game Design Gaming Game Development

I was considering NodeJs too for the back end, and comparing it with the new Rails 5 and its new API feature. I was also considering the Meteorjs framework which has Nodejs in the backend, and would ease the frontend development too with its reactive components.

Regarding webkit, I’m not sure how it’s going to be helpful, as I’ve never used it before so I’d like your thoughts about it.

Rails is another good selection but in this game, you need socket communication. You need fully active connection with server. So, NodeJS’s socket programming is very good then Rails. You can serve an API with Rails about your game. So other developers can make applications with your api.

I would like you to check out meteor.com and tell me your thoughts about it. It’s a full web development stack that’s pretty impressive and is a great option to consider.
