There is way to calculate the speed from the Shadow created my the car
Ull be needing
ARDUINO ( works well for both uno and mega)

• LDR (Light Dependent Resistor)

• 500 Ohms Resistor

And the circuit for it is way too simple
Connect 5V to one leg of resistor.( Connect the other leg (of resistor ) to one leg of LDR . Connect A0 (analog input) to that same leg of LDR. Connect GND to other pin of the LDR.)

The circuit calculates the time of Shadow
And calculate the speed ,app is available for that ,however this idea might have limitation at night

I’ll post some pics where I’ll install this setup and there is no possibility of multiple cars crossing. But there are cases when when pedestrians and vehicles travel simultaneously. So ldr may not work in such a condition. John Rodrigues what is your plan about the shadow app ? Would you please share the link or please give some more details. And how will it be installed physically to measure the speed.Amar Jyoti Bairagi There may be a case when some one is running…we don’t want to unnecessary ring a false alarm. Thanks for suggestions…

What is status of ldr sensors and how can we help you??

Sorry for not updating the project for a long time. But here we stand, I am using the ultrasonic sensor to measure the speed of the car, as sonar works. Then if the car is overspeeding, the camera module connected with RPI will start recording the video. Then I will extract images from this video. Through image processing, I will distinguish the car from animals and humans. If it is a car, using python’s ocr or matlab code, I will convert the car’s number plate to text and send it to some other place using a GSM module. The destination will have an LCD screen that will display the text sent by the gsm module.

These are the challenges—

1. The ultrasonic sensor will work in a range of 3-4 meters. The project starts as the car over speeds. So overall, we would have about 2-3 seconds to record the video, extract the image, convert to text and send it using the gsm module. So, want suggestions on how can we measure the speed of an object like 6-7 seconds before or should i find a replacement to ultrasonic sensor and use LDR??

2. Python’s ocr is not very accurate. Any suggestions??

3. Better camera as compared to RPI’s default camera module#?
