Imagine the object to be squashed - a round-deep aluminum tray, filled with organic garbage.
And, after the squashing is done, a hatch opens and the flattened tray drops “down under”.

As per the project idea and view- its for indoor kitchen purpose in a house, hence the size should be also be considered. Its should be small and could be built such that it takes over only a small portion of the Kitchen room. Thus the crushing mechanism must also be designed such that totally in fits within the small size limit and the trash can should have a considerable holding capacity.
Yes, of-course, it should be able to be fitted inside a normal-sized trash-can. I’m thinking - that this mechanism shown in the video - without the casing, without the rotating can-holder -
only the micro-controller, the linear actuator and the needed connector - I’m thinking this kind of mechanism can all be put together tightly - and serve as the crushing mechanism. What do you think?
