Wearable Cooling System - Overview Of Existing Features

This illustration of an existing #CoolIndia system prototype shows the major components:

  • Thermoelectric modules (TEMs) for cooling. One module at a time cools rapidly for a short period, and then the cooling is done at the next module in sequence. Each TEM has a sensor to make sure the temperature at the TEM stays within the limits defined by the multiple input / multiple output (MIMO) control algorithm.

  • Maglev blowers circulate air over the heatsinks to remove heat from the TEMs. The blowers are mounted to the side of the heatsinks to reduce the height of the overall cooling stack. The heatsinks are standard finned aluminum units.

  • An off-the-shelf powerbank with rechargeable lithium polymer (LiPo) cells provides 5 Volt current for the system at between 1 Amp and 2 Amps. This type of powerbank is typically used to recharge phones and other small electronics. The system can also be powered directly from household current using a micro USB cable and wallpack.

  • Solar renewable energy charging solutions can recharge the powerbank.

  • Insulated copper wires connect the components together. The wires are soldered to a commercial ribbon cable which terminates at the printed circuit board using a standard header that can be disconnected.

  • A printed circuit board (PCB) on rigid silicon substrate. The digital processor’s algorithm manages the sensors, cooling elements and controls. A temperature sensor connected to the PCB senses the ambient temperature. The system only operates when the temperature is not within user-defined parameters. Surface-mounted controls allow user input.
