use of tesla coil is the only way we can step down the lightening voltage,but d voltage in lightening may b around 50 million volts with 1000’s of amps of current , as we know the transfrmer is constant power device which means if we reduce the voltage the current increases to maintain power constant and vice versa ,so just imagine if we try to reduce that huge quantity of voltage to low what could b the value of current and wat size conductors do we need to carry that current !!!

One way out is to Utilize that surge of Energy in Real Time… like boiling the water and then using it for other work, even converting the Heat into manageable (storable) electrical energy… there might be other applicable idea.
Electrical Storage that can handle Kilo Amps of Current is imaginable… may be Extra High Conductive Batteries, of course with Extra High Storage Capacity. Will trap most of the Surge. We can think of Capacitive Storage too.
