Help me select a sensor that can be placed on the road which could be most efficient in counting of cars… Then we can proceed further

Why are you just focusing on counting number of cars? As if you are planning it for India, two wheeler and pedestrians cover a major part of road.

I was also working on the same project, I presented a paper in ARM STUDENT DESIGN CONTEST 2015, and was in top 25 teams in India. I listened to so many projects, there were two mainly two ways, image processing and metal detection to calculate traffic density. What do you think about making a hybrid of this two?

I actually read about this sensor… its called anisotropic magneto-resistive sensor and it detects the magnetic signals from the car due to the ferrousparts in the car. Also i found out that image processing is also applicable for this idea. I agree we should try to combine these two but first lets see which is more efficient in these.

image processing is efficient for this project, but during snowfalls, smoke, dust, fog and heavy rain can cause interuption in image processing so metal detector &image processor combo can use in your project for higher efficiency
