Hey Alison, a very good question!
I am explaining my answer in context with Indian education system, since I am an Indian. I don’t know how the system works in US, so pardon me if you didn’t get my answer & feel free to ask again if you didn’t get me.
Well, we have to goal to connect each college student with other one, so that anyone can ask to student of any college for solving their problems. This expands the network base on an individual level & hence, your problem will be solved much faster and you will also get the best solution.
Well, connecting academic programs would take a lot of stuff to be put on table like talking with college managements etc & etc. Initially, we are not planning on that level. We are first thinking of connecting the students such as in project works, solving problems, promotion of their college fests and maybe one wants to sell their books & etc. So, if this gets hit, then we can go to another level if we want!
Yeah, we know that it might sometimes strike you as college student Facebook, but it isn’t. We stress on ourselves not making our site as such. If we made it like that, your idea would not be a hit as it would strike as just a copy of Facebook, & moreover, there would chances that we might loose popularity, as Facebook is loosing now.
I can say our site would be like Collaborizm, but with more diverse view.
