Problem with GSM modules is you cant make them sleep and wake up when server sends any command. Because GSM modules today can either be a TCP/UDP server or client. And in a server client set up, client always triggers the action. In our case if we make GSM module as client, we will not know when server wants the module to wake up unless we are pinging it continously and asking for any new updates. So long term polling is the way to go. We could make the GSM module as server but it has dynamic IP and has NAT enabled so the server doesnt know to which IP it should connect to. I live with GSM modules everyday so thought this would help. Read more on my blog why we cant use GSM module as server unless we have a static IP.
