IDEA

Hi Steven Reubenstone. The best motors for this kind of project would be aeromodelling brushless DC motors.

I’m worried about the weight and the thrust though. Fan propellers are inefficient when it comes to generating a lot of thrust. I suggest you to use double bladed pusher type propellers. And keep the thrust to weight ratio well above 1.1. Otherwise, the motion will be like that of a road roller, as it cannot overcome the friction between the wheels and the ground.

Another thing to note is the prop diameter. It will be big, like 6 inches and above.

A typical 1600 kv RC model motor with a 5 inch diameter propeller gives about 300 gram-force of thrust when connected to a 2S Li-po battery. For best results, the all up weight of the model airplane must not be above 250 grams. Hence, for this project, I think you would need quadcopter propellers and motors.

Duct bldc motor is best here which are used in rc jets which are lipo driven. Control System will be easy to tun

Harsha Alva You can use a bigger EDF motor for both forward and upward thrust by having a Lbend to divert 40% of the air to the cushion. But here will be the complication

  1. You cannot turn the boat from the same place because of both forward and upward acts at the same time.
  2. Speed control will also be difficult.

For cushion, i tested Nylon and Parachute cloth was great. I tried rubber, plastic bags and all but it produces more friction plus it gets worn out easily on rough terrain.

Narendran Ashok Make this a step-by-step tutorial. I’d like to make this into an FPV racing hovercraft.
